jesus christ…i’m exhausted just looking at the upcoming list of events we’ve got planned. rager after rager with hardly a moment of pause between. it’s hard to recall a spat of shows that i was more excited about, and it all starts tomorrow! [note: follow the links to hear music from each of the bands]
TUESDAY APRIL 29th – ABSOLUT (Toronto), WILD MOHICANS + APOCALYPSE NOW
ok, so this show isn’t actually happening in May…but it’s damn close, and Toronto’s ABSOLUT are absolute monsters! these Canadians are heavily influenced by Japanese HC acts a la CRUDE, then filtered through a metallic ‘sieve’ that puts their own distinct brand on the incessant pummelling and raw noise (topped-off with tortured/blown-out vocals). when first listening to their vinyl debut ‘Punk Survival’ i was blown away, immediately rushing into my housemate’s room and insisting he come hear it. there’s plenty of bands who play similarly styled music, but very few who do so with such doggedness and proficiency. they’ve captured the sound of violence!!!

SATURDAY, MAY 3rd – BLACK AND WHITE (Japan), ROUGH KIDS (CA), LONG KNIFE + ADELITAS
this will be the most wild SATURDAY of the punk-century!!! THREE shows in ONE day as part of the ‘PDX Punk Family Circus.’ it all kicks off at The Know with our 1st (and probably last) ever MATINEE SHOW!
this ‘special scenario’ exists exclusively because of the gravity of touring acts we’ve got in town for the day. both BLACK AND WHITE and ROUGH KIDS are channeling the quintessential elements of punk’s glory days, which we seldom have the pleasure of hearing done so well…cause it’s fucking hard to replicate!?!?!
BLACK AND WHITE take a wild rock’n’rollin approach to getting it done, having been touted as the “best punk to come out of Japan since Teengenerate.” i certainly won’t argue with that sentiment! their tourmates, ROUGH KIDS (Sorry State Records), take a slightly more controlled approach to producing a perfected mixture of pop-melody and “classic punk hooks delivered with an intensity that will snare even the toughest of hardcore kids.” ’77 is back for a day!!!
almost forgot to mention that local-support acts are off-the-chain! LONG KNIFE‘S Poison Idea-worship needs no introduction…they fucking rule! this bill also features a long overdue return of latino-punx, ADELITAS (scroll through this shit to read more of my gushing praise for ADELITAS). …and at the end of this monumental show immediately attend TWO MORE!
if you were to only attend one show this spring, i’d gander that this is the one you’d wanna be at! Texas’ RADIOACTIVITY have surpassed undoubtedly high-expectations (featuring Jeff Burke and Mark Ryan of Marked Men fame) by crafting one of the most anticipated/well-received debut LPs in recent memory. “flawless” is the only word i can come up with to describe the songcraft and seamlessness of said LP. pop sensibility and melody are delivered with punk-like urgency…the end-product being outstandingly catchy and fun!
tourmates, SUSPICIOUS BEASTS (from Japan!!!), put a psychedelic-tinge on timeless/retro garage-rock&roll. fans of Reigning Sound, Black Lips, etc. are in for a treat!
Portland’s beloved THE ESTRANGED, hot-on-the-heels of a European-tour and recently released (3rd) LP on Dirtnap Records, start the night off with their distinct brand of post-punk…be sure to get here punctually to ensure you don’t miss a second! FB event page here
FRIDAY, MAY 9th – TYVEK (Detroit), FIREBALLS OF FREEDOM + HOODED HAGS
fans of In The Red and Goner Records’ bands should be squealing with glee at the opportunity to see Detroit’s TYVEK, who are making a return to the pacific northwest after a long hiatus. their fuzzy and jangly garage-punk has gained a legion of followers since their early incarnations some 7 years back. TYVEK’s more recent single ‘Wayne County Roads‘ perhaps marks a slightly less frenetic approach for the band, in exchange for a sing-a-long/stomp-worthy pulse. if you’ve got albums from proto-punks like THE URINALS, or more contemporary acts like EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING in your collection then you ought attend this show…fact!
TUESDAY, MAY 13th – ARCTIC FLOWERS, MEA CULPA (New Orleans), PISS TEST + OLD CITY
New Orlean’s punk veterans are headed our way with a new post-punk project, MEA CULPA, that will knock your socks off! Despite the current trends in the world of post-punk, which seem to draw their inspiration heavily from UK progenitors, MEA CULPA have a distinctly US flavor…it’s as though their songs could easily make their way onto a Dangerhouse comp (think The Dils and X) and go unnoticed as being contemporary!?!? great stuff!
